Cairn Terrier Doormat #1 | Cairn Welcome Mat

Tenacious, spirited, and endlessly entertaining, the Cairn Terrier — also known as the Cairn, Toto Dog, Cairnie, Highland Terrier, Scruffy, Ratter, Wee Terrier, Farm Terrier, and Earth Dog — is one of Scotland’s oldest working terriers. Originating in the Scottish Highlands and the Isle of Skye, Cairns were bred to bolt foxes, otters, and other quarry from the rocky cairns and crevices of the Highland landscape — hence the name. Recognised by the Kennel Club in 1912, the breed gained worldwide fame as Toto in the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz, a role that perfectly captured their fearless, curious, and utterly determined character. Small in stature but enormous in personality, the Cairn Terrier has been a devoted companion and working dog for centuries.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is this doormat designed for?
This doormat is designed for Cairn Terrier lovers — devoted fans of the Cairn, Cairnie, Toto Dog, Wee Terrier, and all the other names this extraordinary breed has earned. Whether you know them as a Highland Terrier, a Farm Terrier, or simply a Scruffy little Earth Dog, this design brings breed pride to your front door. The Cairn Terrier’s illustration forms the O in the word HOME, making it a clever and unmistakable welcome for every visitor.

What makes this doormat unique?
The O-replacement design is the heart of it — the Cairn Terrier’s portrait is set directly into the word HOME, so the breed becomes part of the message itself rather than just a decoration alongside it. The illustration captures the Cairn’s most recognisable features: the shaggy coat, the bright alert eyes, and the compact, sturdy build that made them such effective working terriers in the Scottish Highlands. Printed onto natural coir using UV-cured inks, the design holds its detail and colour far better than standard screen-printed mats. It is a personal, considered piece — not something you would find in a high street home store. For more terrier doormat styles, browse our Terrier Collection.

What sizes are available?
This doormat comes in three sizes: 16x24" / 41x61cm, 18x30" / 46x76cm, and 24x36" / 61x91cm, making it easy to find the right fit for your entryway.

Can this mat be used outdoors?
This natural coir doormat is best suited for covered or sheltered outdoor areas such as porches and covered entryways. Coir is a natural fiber that performs best when protected from direct rain and prolonged moisture.

Why choose a coir doormat?
Coir is a natural fiber made from coconut husks — durable, biodegradable, and excellent at scraping dirt from shoes. It is the traditional choice for front door mats and holds up well in covered outdoor areas. The non-slip backing adds extra stability on hard surfaces, keeping the mat firmly in place through daily use.

Is this a good gift for a Cairn Terrier lover?
Absolutely — it makes a thoughtful housewarming, birthday, or holiday gift for anyone with a love of Cairn Terriers, Toto Dogs, or dog-themed home décor. A distinctive, durable, and personal present for any Cairnie devotee. Tag us at @pupularmats — we love seeing the mats in their new home.
