Eastern Screech Owl Doormat #1 | Shivering Owl Welcome Mat

The Eastern Screech Owl — also known as Megascops Asio, Eastern Screech-Owl, Common Screech-Owl, Shivering Owl, Little Horned Owl, Little Dukelet, Demon Owl, Dusk Owl, and Scritch Owl — is one of North America's most widespread and adaptable small owls, found across eastern North America from Canada to Mexico. Despite its name, the Eastern Screech Owl does not screech — its most distinctive call is a mournful, descending whinny or a long, quavering trill, earning it the folk name Shivering Owl. A master of camouflage, it roosts in tree cavities by day, its mottled grey or rufous plumage rendering it virtually invisible against bark. First formally described by Carl Linnaeus in 1758, the Eastern Screech Owl has long been a fixture of woodland edges, suburban gardens, and city parks — small in stature but outsized in character, and one of the most successful urban raptors in North America.
