Northern Elephant Seal Peeking Doormat #1 | Seal Welcome Mat

The Northern Elephant Seal (Mirounga angustirostris) makes its home in the eastern and central North Pacific, ranging as far north as Alaska and breeding mainly on islands off California and Baja California, Mexico. Females keep their smaller noses rather than developing the large, trunk-like nose of adult males. These ocean travellers spend about nine months of the year at sea, much of that time underwater searching for food. Their story is also one of recovery: after nineteenth-century commercial sealing brought them close to extinction, a small surviving population in Mexico helped rebuild their numbers.

The Northern Elephant Seal Peeking Doormat #1 features a female seal peeking from the left edge, with large eyes, long whiskers, a rounded muzzle and finely drawn skin folds. Her detailed black portrait sits inside a black rectangular border on natural coir, leaving an open expanse of coir to the right. Crafted from natural coir fibre (coconut husk), this mat effectively traps dirt and debris at the door. The sturdy non-slip rubber backing keeps it securely in place. Natural coir is best suited for covered or sheltered entryways, not recommended for fully exposed outdoor use.

A thoughtful housewarming or birthday gift for a seal lover, marine wildlife enthusiast or someone who feels at home by the coast, this whiskered visitor brings a little Pacific character to the doorstep.
