Red-Tailed Hawk Doormat #1 | All-Weather | Red-Tail Welcome Mat

Red-Tailed Hawk — also known as the Red-tail, Red Hawk, Chickenhawk, Harlan’s Hawk, Krider’s Hawk, Fuertes’ Hawk, and by its scientific name Buteo jamaicensis — is North America’s most iconic and widespread bird of prey. Found across an extraordinary range of habitats — from Alaskan boreal forests and Great Plains grasslands to Sonoran deserts and urban parks — the Red-Tailed Hawk has been a constant presence in North American skies for thousands of years. First formally described by Johann Friedrich Gmelin in 1788, it belongs to the genus Buteo, a group of broad-winged soaring hawks found across the Americas. The species is perhaps best known for its distinctive brick-red tail, which develops in adults after their second year, and its piercing, descending cry — so recognisable that it is routinely used in film and television as the default sound of any eagle or hawk. Revered in many Indigenous cultures as a messenger and symbol of vision and power, the Red-Tailed Hawk remains one of the most studied and celebrated raptors in the world.
